Beatrice Prior is about to make the most important decision of her life. At the age of 16 she has to choose what faction will become her new family. With factions based on different virtues what virtue does Beatrice embody most? Before the decision all 16 year olds take a test determining what faction seems the best for them. Beatrice’s results are inconclusive, a almost unheard of result. This inconclusive test result means that she is Divergent, a person able to resist “brain hijacking” started by serums. Joining her new faction she learns about a plot that could throw all the factions into disruption and kill her. She and the mysterious Four must stop it before they stop her… for good.
Divergent is labeled as a science fiction, young adult dystopia novel. After a world war, society decides to split into factions of people with different virtues. Erudite is intelligence, Amity is resolution, Candor is truthfulness, Abnegation is selflessness and Dauntless is courage. Erudite are teachers and doctors, Amity are caretakers and counselors, Candor are lawyers, Abnegation is government officials and Dauntless are police and protectors. At a certain date all sixteen year olds take a test to determine what faction they would be best in. But test scores do not change your choice. The next day the teens will choose what faction they will join for the rest of their lives. After joining their chosen faction, they go through a initiation process, some grueling and harmful like the Dauntless initiation. At this time tensions are at their highest with Erudite verbally attacking Abnegation. In my personal opinion I like this book. It is full of action and mystery, making you wonder what will happen next. The ending surprised me very much with a cliff hanger that will lead you on to the next book, Insurgent. This amazing thriller will keep you hooked for a while and you will be satisfied and amazed at the end of the last book in the 3 book series. I highly recommend this book and it is a important book to read if you are looking for a book to read.
